The pump you forget about until the atmospheric river
Southwest Washington does its raining in long, saturating stretches, and the water table under a lot of Clark County homes rises with it. The sump pump's job is boring right up until a November storm parks over the county, and then it is the only appliance in the house that matters. A pump that has been sitting dry since spring, a stuck float switch, or a clogged discharge line all fail the same way: silently, until the crawlspace is a pond.
We install new sump systems where water has started showing up, replace pumps that are past trusting, and add battery backup units that keep pumping through the power outages that arrive with the same storms that need the pumping. Every install gets the check valve, a properly routed discharge, and a real test. If you cannot remember the last time yours ran, that is exactly the pump we should look at before the rain comes back.

How do I know if my sump pump still works?
Lift the float, or pour a bucket of water into the basin, and listen. It should kick on, evacuate the water, and shut off without chattering. If it hesitates, hums, or short-cycles, it is telling you something while the weather is still dry. That is the cheap time to find out.
Is a battery backup worth it?
Here, usually yes. The storms that flood crawlspaces are the same ones that drop power lines, which means the pump is most likely to lose power at the exact moment it has the most work to do. A backup unit covers the gap.
Why does my pump run constantly?
Either the water table is genuinely that high, or something is lying to the pump: a stuck float, a failed check valve letting the same water fall back into the basin, or a discharge line pushing water right back to the foundation. Each has a different fix, and we can tell you which one you have.
