A humming disposal needs a model-specific check
A jam can keep the grinding plate from turning. Keeping the switch on is not a way to clear it. Whirlpool directs owners to disconnect power and use the approved tool or method for their model; hands stay out of the chamber.

A recurring trip needs more than another reset
Silence can have several causes, including a supply or overload issue. A reset is not a diagnosis. Report whether the disposal's overload, a receptacle's protection, or the circuit breaker tripped, if you can identify it without opening anything.

A leak or backup changes the job
Stop using a leaking sink and disposal, and arrange an inspection. Ask where the leak starts and whether the proposed work addresses the disposal, a connection or the drain piping before deciding on replacement.
A dishwasher that stopped draining immediately after disposal work deserves a connection check. In Vancouver, keep grease and food scraps out
Cold water does not make grease a suitable drain input. The City of Vancouver says fats, oils and grease build up in sewer pipes, causing blockages and overflows. Its advice is to scrape or wipe dishes before washing, collect cooled grease in a container for the garbage, and put food scraps in compost, an organics cart or the garbage as appropriate.
